The Codex Dresden book Codex, which is also known as the Codex Dresdensis, is a pre-Columbian Mayan book of the eleventh or twelfth century created by the Yucatan Maya. It is believed to be a copy of an original text produced between three and four hundred years earlier/5(19).

The Dresden Codex is the oldest surviving book from the Americas, dating to the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The codex was rediscovered in the city of Dresden and is how the Maya book received its present name. It is located in the museum of the Saxon State Library in Dresden, Germany.

For more information, go here. THE DRESDEN CODEX. We first learn of the Dresden Codex when we hear that Johann Christian Götze, Director of the Royal Library at Dresden, obtained the codex from the private owner in Vienna in InGötze gave it to the Royal Library, where it still resides.

(The library's current name is the Sächsische Landesbibliothek). The Dresden Codex is a key document for the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphs and for the study of astronomy and chronology of the Maya.

While many other codices from pre-Columbian Mesoamerica exist, only the Dresden, Paris, Madrid, and Grolier Codices were written by the Maya. Exactly where the Dresden was written remains unknown.
